Open Positions

Prospective research students and postdocs are always welcome to get in touch about joining my research group! The next round of PhD applications will most likely be in fall 2026. Before sending me an email, please make sure you read the following information:

Joining as a master's student without prior experience in quantum information research: The usual pathway is to first join UdeM as a master's student (without a predefined supervisor) and to take some courses in quantum information in the first two semesters. Towards the middle of the first semester or the beginning of the second semester, if you are doing well so far in your quantum courses, you are welcome to contact me contact me by email, attaching your CV and transcript, to discuss possible supervision. I am not able to directly accept or to take part in the application process for master's students without existing quantum information research experience, so please do not email me about this.

Funding: Once you start full-time research (usually starting in the summer semester at the end of the first year until the summer semester at the end of the second year), you will receive a research stipend, in my group currently $18k per year. You may also be eligible for various departmental scholarships, and further funding can be obtained by working as a TA.

Joining as a master's student with prior experience in quantum information research (exceptional): If you already have research experience in quantum information or a related field before starting the master's (typically with original research published or in preparation), you can contact me already during the master's application process at UdeM. Please send me an email outlining your research experience and interests, and including your CV and transcripts. In such exceptional cases, you may already be eligible for a research stipend from the beginning of the master's.

Joining as a PhD student: Existing research experience at the master's level in quantum information, theoretical physics or related fields is required. Unfortunately, I am not able to take any students without an existing quantum background at present. If you have a background in other areas of computer science or related fields and would like to transition to quantum information research, I recommend you to do a master's degree with a significant quantum information element first. If you are in the process of completing your master's with the appropriate research experience, feel free to send me an email outlining your research experience and interests, and including your CV and transcripts. During the annual application season October-January, I may not have the capacity to reply to all emails from prospective applicants. Please apply directly through the Mila supervision request system before 1st December each year (I am using that Mila system for all applications just for ease of use, so please apply here even if you are not interested in AI).

Funding: you will receive a PhD stipend, in my group currently $36k per year (plus fees fully covered, including for international students). You may also be eligible for various departmental scholarships, and further funding can be obtained by working as a TA.

Joining as a postdoc: Various postdoctoral fellowships are advertised every year at UdeM. I am generally happy to support strong applications to these fellowships from potential postdoctoral candidates within quantum information/computation/foundations. For exceptionally strong candidates working on topics very close to my own research, I would also consider funding a postdoctoral position from my own research grants. In either of these case, feel free to send me an email, outlining your research experience and interests, and including your CV.

Joining as an intern: If you are from within UdeM, and have excellent grades in mathematical subjects, feel free to contact me by email, attaching your CV and transcript. Unfortunately, I don't usually have the capacity to take external interns at present, except in exceptional cases.

I try my best to reply to emails about joining my group which follow the instructions above within 1-2 weeks. Unfortunately, given the extremely high number of emails I receive every week, I am unable to reply to emails from people who have not taken the time to read the descriptions above.
